Missed Music

Music you didn’t know you needed…until now.

Friday Mix: Stuff I like

Not much of a theme for this Friday’s mix. Just a collection of songs I really like that I think most people haven’t heard. It’s likely you’ve heard some of them and nearly certain you’ve heard of many of these artists, but these tracks may have gotten past you.

I’m trying something new on this blog. Whenever I can find it, I will link you to YouTube, where you can hear the whole song rather than just a clip. I used to link to Amazon, where you could buy the song, but a friend told me he’s rarely ready to buy after hearing just a clip no matter who recommends it. I figure if you hear the song and like it, you can easily go to Amazon or Border’s or the library or newsgroups or wherever you go and find the track or disc yourself. Please let me know what you think of this.

  1. My Mathematical Mind – Spoon
This is my favorite song from Spoon. I like the piano work and the vocal melody. The lyrics are the heart of this tune with gems like, “…planning for the apocalypse is not considered — considered cool. I don’t suggest it myself,” and, “My mathematical mind can see the breaks.”
  2. Where Have All the Good People Gone – Sam Roberts
This guy has a great jam band sound. This is from the album We Were Born in a Flame and it’s all this good.
  3. Solid Gold – Eagles of Death Metal
In addition to completely rocking out (guitarist Josh Homme was in Kyuss and is in Queens of the Stone Age), they are hilarious. I love this catchy song, but I had never seen this video before.
  4. Three or Four – The New Pornographers
I love the stomping intro to this song. Literally, the first 2 seconds of this song are my favorite. Sadly, I couldn’t find the whole song, so you don’t get to hear what I’m talking about from this sample. It’s cool, though.
  5. Get Down Moses – Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros
Joe’s death at age 50 was tragic, as evidenced by this fantastic song released the year of his death.
  6. Harper and the Midget – Twinemen
I find this track as interesting as the title suggests. Complex and syncopated percussion pulses while sax and vocals take turns harmonizing during this strange and bloody tale.
  7. Got You (Where I Want You) – The Flys
This is an odd thing to say, but this poppy kind of song is usually something I wouldn’t like, but I really like this song.
  8. Flame -VPN
I’m probably going to do a write-up on this entire album soon because it’s really good. For now, check out my favorite track from For Nearby Stars.
  9. This Will Be Our Year – OK Go
No treadmills this time. Unfortunately, the only version of this song I could find on YouTube has this video of ridiculously bad dancers in their living room. Try to ignore it and listen to this cool cover.
  10. New Slang – The Shins
This mix takes a much mellower turn from here on in. James Russell Mercer is one talented songwriter.
  11. Just a Little – Steve Tannen
I like the delicate guitar and sweet singing on this track.
  12. Decatur, Or, Round of Applause for Your Stepmother – Sufjan Stevens
Sufjan feels bad about treating his step-mom like shit for his whole childhood and wrote her this interesting, organic song as an apology.
  13. Summertime – Jesca Hoop
This song is just beautiful. My daughter loves this song and every time it comes on my iPod, my wife goes and checks who it is again. I don’t know whether she has it on her iPod yet.
  14. Good Shit – Cornershop
I thought I had recommended this song to you already, but I can’t find it in my spreadsheet or on my site. This is from their 1997 release When I Was Born for the 7th Time. My wife hates this album as much as I love it, which is extreme in both cases.

Enjoy with a milk shake. It’s nearly summer.
