Missed Music

Music you didn’t know you needed…until now.

My daughter and David Hidalgo hit it off.

I just got back from seeing Los Lobos tonight in Beaver Creek, CO. Props to my wife for finding out last night that they were playing today (thanks, baby). Miraculously, there were very good seats still available. We got second row, stage left. If you aren’t a fan of Los Lobos, I would venture you just haven’t heard much of their music. Go out and buy Kiko today. Then get Colossal Head. And then This Time and then Good Morning Aztlan. And then just go ahead and buy the rest of their catalog.

Fantastic show. They did a lot of songs off of Kiko: Maricela, Saint Behind the Glass, Arizona Skies, Kiko. They covered Bertha (Grateful Dead) and Guantanamera (traditional), and closed with La Bamba > Good Lovin’ > La Bamba. Absolutely fantastic.

We took my 7 year old daughter, Julia. She’s a fan, naturally, because I play them for her and they’re great.  After the show, we stayed to buy a CD and meet the band. They had seen Julia dancing up by the stage and Steve Berlin (sax) asked her what her favorite song was. She told him Two Janes (Kiko), which they had not played. He liked that answer. He nudged David Hidalgo next to him and said, “Hey, David, her favorite song is Two Janes.” David Hidalgo liked that answer a lot, since he wrote the song, and shook her hand and mine. It was a great and memorable moment for us both.
