Missed Music

Music you didn’t know you needed…until now.

Hard edged and melodic accessible rock from …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead

Continuing with yesterday’s theme of unfortunately named bands, today I want to recommend …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead out of Austin, TX. I don’t hate the name; I think it’s kind of funny, actually. The problem is they aren’t want you’d think. No Cookie Monster vocals, no Math Rock rhythms. They DO absolutely rock out, but they bring melodic and thoughtful songs, and moments of beauty squeezed between hard riffs of sucker punch intensity.

They remind me of Pink Floyd in some ways, not that their sound is very similar. Rather, they show the same patient willingness to build a song and then crush you with screaming vocals or melee guitar when they get around to it.

...And you won't know us by our band's name.

I picked up Worlds Apart in 2006 on a whim and was blown away, perhaps because my expectations were low. If you pick up this disc, check out

  • Will You Smile Again For Me (with a brutal 5/4 opening that makes me want to start busting up furniture)
  • The Rest Will Follow (which also opens hard and settles down 30 seconds in), and
  • The Lost City of Refuge.

I was excited when I found So Divided, which came out in 2006, and they did not disappoint. They  range around in a variety of grooves and rock out quite a bit. Listen to

  • Stand in Silence
  • Wasted State of Mind
  • So Divided; and
  • Gold Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory.

I have made a note to go back and check out the rest of their catalog, which goes back to 1998 and includes a brand new release, The Century of Self. Visit their official site at http://www.trailofdead.com.

Side note: The Bonnaroo line-up was released today. I’m all geeked out and wondering what this year’s impossible conflicts will be.
